Illinois teams join Alton to play baseball in Missouri

Less than a week until Alton baseball is set to get under way in the newly formed COVID League with the cancellation of American Legion baseball this summer because of the coronavirus pandemic, anticipation is running high to get on the diamond.

“I know my group’s really excited, both levels, juniors and seniors,” Alton manager Doug Booten said. “They’re ready to go. Most of them missed their entire high school season and the handful that we have that are returning from college, they missed most of their seasons and they’re all ready.”

The COVID League, as it’s been dubbed for the COVID-19 pandemic that’s wiped out a good chunk of American Legion baseball throughout the country, including Illinois and Missouri, was started by Washington (Mo.) manager Kent Getsee with three age groups (AAA for senior legion-aged players, AA for junior legion-aged players and A for freshmen-aged players).
