Crazy Year For Youth BaseballDate: 4/24/2020

Hello baseball families!
Can we take a break from the news reports and toilet paper hunting for just a few minutes? Do you miss sports as much as my family does? Who would have thought that the spring sports seasons would screech to a halt in a matter of a few weeks? Having 2 baseball players myself and my real job has me working with high school athletes, I can tell you it's been rough watching things unfold for the athletes and coaches.
My heart hurts for the kids that have been training and gearing up for their spring sport seasons. Cooperstown has cancelled their 12u tournaments for the 2020 year. Some little leagues have already cancelled their whole seasons. High schools and colleges are looking at or have already cancelled their seasons. That's where it really hit me regarding the athletes. My heart completely broke for the senior athletes. Whether it be college or high school. They have waited patiently to be the senior athlete...the top dog...the example to the underclassmen...the seasoned veteran. To have their final moments with their team...their athletic families just end like a thud. I know those are small beans compared to other things in the world, but they still matter to the kids. And the parents who wanted to see their senior's final jog onto the field. Final hit. Final out. Final pitch. There could be some athletes that are left in a pinch when they thought they had opportunities to have this season to further their athletics to the next level. It's a big deal for a younger person for sure. It's definitely teaching life lessons on how to be flexible and how quickly things can change.
Let's discuss a couple of things. I've heard some mutterings about allowing college seniors to possibly make them "eligible for 2021 school year". I can't even begin to know how to weigh that out. Are there any of our baseball families in that situation? How do you weigh that out?
For those who might have a summer season ahead, do you have any great ideas for keeping the players tuned up? My youngest son's coaches have had them doing conditioning training with the whole team on the Zoom app. They seem to enjoy seeing each other at the very least. We have our kids batting balls into a Bownet in our basement. With the weather on the decent side they go outside and do baseball drills, pitching and batting. They also have been watching some YouTube videos of professional athletes and as well as instructional videos. Do you have anything you've been doing that breaks things up? We'd love to hear some new ideas!
Stay healthy baseball families!
